Independence Day
July Fourth is known as Independence Day, a day off from work for many, a day to contemplate our government’s history and the lofty concepts in the famous Declaration.
In addition, let July Fourth be also a day of regional independence in our food supply. Salmon and peas and new potatoes are traditional foods for the day.
Local lettuces and mesclun greens are ready for delicious salads, maybe with crumbled local cheese. And why not get local poultry, Maine-raised steaks, and bratwurst for the grill? Strawberry shortcake with local cream or strawberry-rhubarb pies or rhubarb coffee cake complete the meal.
Don't forget to decorate your table with a local bouquet!
