Flowering Plants

Spring comes early in the Snell Farm Greenhouses.

Perennial seeds need to experience cold in order to break dormancy, so they are chilled after planting around March 1st and then brought into the warmth of the greenhouses about mid-March when the first plugs and cuttings arrive and the seeding schedule begins in earnest.

Week by week, we sow and transplant, judiciously considerate of each variety’s growth requirements.

Some plants grow much faster than others. Some tropicals appreciate very warm growing temperatures; others like pansies and perennials require the cold.  By mid-May the greenhouses and the coldframes are bursting with flowers and foliage, ready for sale. hanging basket in greenhouse

Customers often consult with our staff to recommend varieties for a specific site, while others leave their containers for us to design and plant. We also plant containers and hanging baskets to be full and ready to adorn porches, steps, and decks.

Our offering of perennials includes many that we over winter ourselves, growing into large husky plants. We also start many of our perennials from bare roots each spring, especially paeonia, dicentra, hosta, and astilbe. Our spring seeded perennials are the bargain for customers with faith that the babies will become grand within a year or two. This three-pronged approach to raising perennial garden plants allows us to sell plants suitable for a wide spectrum of sites, sunny to shady, with many soil types.
